Basic microgrids, or microgrids that have only one source of distributed energy, are now included in GTM’s microgrid definition. With this broadened definition that now includes Enchanted Rock, GTM predicts the microgrid capacity to grow from 3.2 GW to 6.5 GW by 2022. New ownership models from ERock and other companies are contributing to the growth of the industry and allow customers to have access to backup generation for a fraction of what it would typically cost.
